A spinal cord injury (SCI) resulting in the complete loss of lower limb motor control leads to the degradation of the musculoskeletal system of the lower limbs, including muscle atrophy and loss of bone mineral density. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a technology that uses electrical pulses to elicit action potentials in sensory and motor nerves, thus, exciting skeletal muscles that are paralysed due to an injury to the central nervous system.

In this record race the pilot can perform a 100 m sprint race, a 400 m midrange race, or a 2000 m endurance race using a cycling device on standard sports runways, with a flying start after riding a short, arbitrary distance right before the start line.
