Newly elected RESC members bring valuable expertise to ETH Zurich’s Rehabilitation Initiative

ETH Zurich’s Competence Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering and Science (RESC) elected four new members at its General Assembly 2021. The Steering Committee is pleased to welcome Gudela Grote, Zina-Mary Manjaly, Jürgen Pannek, and René Rossi as new RESC members.

Gudela Grote

Gudela Grote is Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics at the ETH Zürich. She studied psychology at the University of Marburg and at the Technical University in Berlin and received her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. A special interest in her research are the increasing flexibility and virtuality of work and their consequences for the individual and organizational management of uncertainty. She has studied team coordination and leadership in high-risk systems, socio-technical integration during digital transformation, and new forms of working. She is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and member of the Swiss National Research Council.

Zina-Mary Manjaly

Dr Manjaly is a neurology specialist who completed her clinical training in England and Switzerland. She is a clinical scientist at ETH Zurich, specialising in fatigue, multiple sclerosis and brain imaging techniques (neuroimaging). Building on her Master’s degree in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) from the University of Oxford, she is also investigating the role of cognitive factors in neurological symptoms and therapeutic efficacy.

Jürgen Pannek

Dr Jürgen Pannek was born in Essen, Germany. A graduate of Medical School at Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany, he has been the Head of Neuro-Urology at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil since 2007.

1996-1997 Research fellow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA
2003-2007 Head of the Department of Neuro-Urology, Marienhospital Herne
2005 Professor of Urology, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany
2011 Professor of Urology, Universität Bern, Switzerland

René Rossi

René Rossi studied applied physics at the University of Neuchâtel and obtained his PhD at ETH Zurich. Since 2003, he has been leading the Laboratory for Biomimetic Membranes and Textiles at Empa, a group of around 45 researchers developing novel smart fibers, textiles and membranes for body monitoring, drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. A special focus is to develop physical and numerical skin models for the analysis of the interactions between materials and the human skin to optimize the protection and ergonomics of systems. René Rossi is adjunct professor at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich and invited professor at the University of Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse/France.

The multidisciplinary expertise of the newly elected members is a valuable asset to ETH Zurich’s Rehabilitation Initiative.

The Rehab Initiative’s mission is to improve the quality of life and participation of people with physical disabilities; thus contributing towards a more inclusive society. With its Competence Centre RESC, which is a nexus of expertise from academia, hospitals, industry, government, healthcare, disability organisations, and other NPOs, it promotes exchange, interdisciplinary research projects, innovative education programmes, and knowledge transfer.
