RESC partners with ETH-startup Leitwert

ETH Zurich’s Competence Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering and Science (RESC) partners with ETH-startup Leitwert. Leitwert provides the IT backbone for the integration and interoperability of wearable sensors and digital health applications that will revolutionize healthcare and clinical research.

Leitwert is convinced that data generated by wearable sensors holds huge potential to improve healthcare and clinical research. At the same time, hospitals and clinical research organizations lack the tools to integrate and operate wearable devices from multiple manufacturers and make the captured health data available for the variety of data driven applications used by larger organization. To solve this situation, Leitwert provides a seamless IT backbone and related services for the integration, operation and interoperability of connected sensors and data applications.

Their focus is on seamless device-to-cloud connectivity – from device firmware over gateways to an open device- and data management platform – allows Leitwert to not only support the organizations that want to integrate wearables into their workflows but also the device manufacturers themselves during product development. Leitwert has established collaborations with leading wearable manufacturers, research institutions and hospitals to ensure their solutions fit the requirements of manufacturers and users of wearable devices all along the device lifecycle.

Based on that IT backbone, Leitwert enables various digital health use cases related to promising topics like personalised healthcare, chronic disease management and decentralised clinical trials. A specific use case is to create a more seamless patient experience and information flow from prevention over acute treatment to post-operative monitoring and rehabilitation. Using the same wearable device, a patient with knee issues can be monitored before a surgery to analyse motion patterns and decide on the most suitable intervention. After the surgery at the hospital to ensure early mobilisation of the affected leg. And after the patient left the hospital to ensure the motion patterns improve and detect any complications.

"By bringing together actors across domains from healthcare providers, clinical research, and technology, RESC catalyses the translation from bench to bedside and with this the genesis of revolutionary rehabilitation approaches. To accelerate this process, Leitwert is honoured to contribute its IT backbone to the digital health ecosystem in the rehabilitation engineering space.", says Miro Käch, Co-Founder and CEO, of the new partnership.

Oliver Stoller, Executive Manager RESC: “Leitwert closes an essential gap for future healthcare systems. Its solutions will enable remote monitoring options and data management to further establish the continuum-of-care and large clinical trials. RESC sees high potential in the company and is looking forward to a fruitful collaboration.”

The ETH Competence Centre RESC is a nexus of expertise from academia, hospitals, industry, government, healthcare, disability organisations, and other NPOs. Its mission is to improve the quality of life and participation of people with physical disabilities; thus, contributing towards a more inclusive society. RESC promotes exchange, interdisciplinary research projects, innovative education programmes, and knowledge transfer.
